There are people who shape our lives in ways we may not even realize at the time. For me, one of those people has always been my Oma — my grandmother. Her story is one of resilience, compassion, and quiet strength, and it’s a story that continues to inspire me every day.
Oma’s journey began when she was just 19 years old, during World War II. At such a young age, she made the bold decision to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle, long before it became a mainstream choice. This wasn’t a passing phase or a trend; it was a decision rooted in her values — values that continue to guide her to this day. The world around her was filled with turmoil and uncertainty, yet Oma chose a path of compassion. She recognized the connection between the animals she saw and the food she ate, and her decision to live a vegetarian life was a reflection of her deep sense of empathy.
The fact that she has maintained this lifestyle for over 70 years is remarkable, especially when you consider how challenging it must have been, both socially and personally, to stay true to her beliefs during such a tumultuous time. Her steadfastness has always been a quiet but powerful reminder to me of what it means to live with integrity and conviction, no matter what the world may throw your way.
But Oma’s story is about more than just her vegetarianism — it’s about the incredible life she has lived. After the war, she didn’t just follow the conventional path; she carved her own. She taught math to princesses in Saudi Arabia, escaped Nazi Germany, and immigrated to the US. In all her travels and adventures, she never lost sight of what mattered most: kindness, respect, and a genuine desire to help others. The wisdom she gained from her life experiences has been shared generously with everyone she meets, and it’s a gift that she’s passed on to me in countless ways.
What strikes me most about my Oma, aside from her strength and her trailblazing spirit, is her kindness. She has the kindest heart of anyone I know. Oma’s ability to listen without judgment, to offer advice without pushing, and to make everyone around her feel valued is something I deeply admire. Her warmth and compassion have touched countless lives, including mine, and have played a huge role in shaping my own values.
When I first began my journey toward a more compassionate and ethical lifestyle, I found myself turning to my Oma for inspiration. Not only did she tell me what vitamins to take and cook vegan food for me, she was and will always be someone I look up to and admire. Her decision to become vegetarian so young — and to remain steadfast in that choice for a lifetime — reminded me that living according to your values is not always easy, but it’s always worth it. She taught me that true strength comes not from following the crowd, but from staying true to who you are, even when it’s hard.
Oma’s influence on my journey goes beyond her vegetarianism. It’s her strength, resilience, and commitment to compassion that has shaped me. She taught me that every thoughtful choice, no matter how small, can ripple out and make a positive impact.
Reflecting on my own decision to live a vegan lifestyle, I realize that Oma’s unwavering integrity and belief in living with purpose have been my foundation. She’s shown me that the road less traveled is often the most meaningful, and that true strength comes from aligning our actions with our deepest values.
As I continue on my path, I carry with me the lessons she’s taught me: to stand firm in my beliefs, to show compassion, and to live with kindness and integrity. I am endlessly grateful for her guidance and love. Thank you, Oma, for inspiring me every day.
